Parents who want to grow their families, pursue personal and professional development opportunities, or manage a better work-life balance often find themselves weighed down by the burdens of traditional childcare. Daycares and nannies present challenges with rigid schedules, high costs, and limited flexibility. One childcare solution that can help parents handle daily personal and professional responsibilities is the State Department-regulated au pair program, a cultural exchange program that provides flexible and affordable childcare.

The au pair program is a unique cultural exchange experience where a young person from abroad lives with an American family on a specialized visa for up to two years. In exchange for a weekly stipend, room and board, and financial support for courses at American colleges, au pairs provide up to 45 hours of flexible childcare per week, which enables families to access an affordable and flexible childcare solution with the bonus of cultural enrichment. In 2023, American families welcomed more than 21,000 au pairs to the United States.

Affordability of the Au Pair Program

With a national childcare crisis unfolding in recent years, the average cost of sending just one child to daycare is now more than an average year of rent. For families with multiple children, these costs rapidly increase, with childcare often becoming an unmanageable expense for families. Given this financial struggle, many working parents—particularly mothers—are forced to quit their jobs or reduce their hours to care for children.

Most often, daycares charge separate fees per child, costing some families well over $20,000 per child annually. The au pair program offers families one flat fee (about $21,000 per year), regardless of how many children are at home, making the program a more affordable option for larger families. The fixed cost of hosting an au pair offers a trusted, manageable solution for families, particularly those raising multiple children.

Achieving Personal & Professional Goals

As someone who has spent nearly 30 years working to grow the au pair program and provide American families with cultural exchange opportunities, I’ve witnessed firsthand how au pairs give parents the support they need to maximize their potential and flourish. Having hosted au pairs from six different countries myself, I can attest that having extra support at home empowered me to pursue my own career aspirations, leading me to the place I am today.

Parents often acknowledge that the constraints of traditional childcare hold them back from pursuing personal goals and ambitions. Whether they want to take night classes, work extra hours, or simply have more social time, parents must accommodate their nanny’s schedule or navigate daycare pick-up times. Without the rigid schedules of traditional childcare and the ability to adapt schedules week-to-week, hosting an au pair gives parents the flexibility to fully embrace their personal and professional lives.

A Culturally Enriching Childcare Experience

Hosting an au pair is much more than just a flexible and affordable childcare option; it is truly a unique opportunity for families to experience new, global perspectives that they wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. Many families find that introducing children to new cultures and perspectives from an early age can instill in them a natural curiosity about the world, help them learn another language, and inform future academic and career aspirations. This cultural immersion fosters open-mindedness and global awareness, giving kids a cultural lens that many traditional childcare options simply cannot replicate.

The au pair program offers parents a blend of affordable, flexible, and culturally enriching childcare that supports both their practical and personal needs. By providing reliable childcare at home, au pairs empower parents to chase after their ambitions. For larger families, au pairs ease the financial burden of unrealistic childcare costs. Parents seeking a well-rounded, family-friendly childcare solution that can cater to the specific care needs of each family should further explore the benefits of hosting an au pair.
